Appeal to motive:
Definition | Example |
When a claim is dismissed, by calling into question the motives of its sponsor. | You are claiming that my girlfriend is cheating on me only because you want to date her yourself! |
Notes | |
While a questionable motive might allow us to expect a particular bias within the argument, or even a reason for fabricating a claim, it is the argument itself that must be assessed. |
Case Study One
It is often claimed that the “real” reason behind the invasion of a country is a hunger for their natural resources. While this is a possibility, this must be demonstrated rather than merely asserted.
Keep in mind that a fallacious argument does not entail an erroneous position.
